As we know roof is the main element of every home that provides us necessary protection from rain, snow and sun. People usually prefer metal roofing as metal offers better strength to our roof.
Most of the metal roofing in Sydney is either aluminium or galvanized steel of 22 – 24 gauges that are fastened with the purlins having a clip at few pre-punched holes. Clips provide necessary allowance for extraction and contraction of panels without causing damage.
Following are the necessary tools that will be needed by you for any typical installation of metal roofing. Few of them are common tools that most of us are familiar with, while there are few special tools also used.
- 24”/12” squares
24” square is needed for preparing panels meant for valley and 12” squares are used for levelling and also doing plumb cuts/bends.
- Panel hemming tool
It is an important tool needed during installation process for using both at panel’s top and bottom side.
- Rivet gun
Also, rivet gun is used with 1/8” drill bits on trim alongside walls, ridge lines, hips, and end walls.
- Duck bill snip
Duck bill snip will make for clean and long cut while cutting through flat of pan.
- Seaming/bending tool
This tool is used for preparing eave trim and also bed around corners. This is another most common tools which will be used throughout the installation.
- Turbo shear
This tool can easily snap on to the end of cordless drill, and just within 2 seconds you have metal shear, which makes beautiful and clean cuts.
- Measuring tape, blade and marking tools
All these are common tools that will be needed for various activities during the installation of roofs.
- Straight edge
This tool will be used a lot for long markings on panels, particularly in the valley, for ensuring that everything is accurate.
- Safety equipment
You must cover your eyes by wearing pair of safety sunglasses, goggles or glasses during installation. You must also protect your hands and avoid any cuts or injuries.
Few tips for installation of roof panel
- For minimizing end laps, you must obtain panels which are at maximum length for the design.
- Try to overlap adjoining panel laps minimum by 6”.
- Install reinforcing plate, sealant and top panel strap when overlapping the adjoining panels.
- Try to ensure that the seams interlock and yet allow for certain movement for little expansion and contraction.
Training will be your best bet
Whatever type of roof that you are going to install, your best defence against any kind of roof failure will be thoroughly trained crew for roof installation. Often workmanship errors become the main reasons of failures of roof system.
In case you have hired a contractor for roofing, which has invested sufficiently in proper training of his crew or hired only well trained and experienced people, then there can be very few problems during installation.
In case of metal roofing, expertise in sheet metal will outweighs other kind of roofing material experience.
