A strong military deters would be aggressors.

National security is the primary purpose of the Federal government. The very purpose of the US government, as defined in the 2nd paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, is “to secure these [unalienable] rights, Governments are instituted among Men”, “that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The dumbest thing the left pushes for is unilateral disarmement. They must truly have a mental disorder to believe this is wise.
